La salida a bolsa en 1995 de Netscape fue el pistoletazo de salida para que las empresas puntocom captaran miles de millones de dólares en inversiones para Internet, nuevas tecnologías, marketing y fibra óptica. Así hasta llegar a Google, por ejemplo. El boom y el ocaso de miles de compañías sirvió para que la Red se difundiera y se hiciera más popular.

EL CASO "LEWINSKY"

Drudge Report da a conocer el escándalo Lewinsky (1998). Apenas conocido, Drudge Report, la web de un particular, derrotó a los principales medios de comunicación de EEUU al dar a conocer el escándalo en el que se vio envuelto el ex-presidente Clinton. Según los expertos, este sitio es el origen de los blogs.

3 - EL CEO DE AMAZON ES ELEGIDO EL HOMBRE DEL AÑO

Jeff Bezos, de Amazon, es elegido hombre del año por la revista Time (1999).

En este año, los vendedores de artículos online vieron como sus ventas se incrementaban un 50%. Amazon fue la gran precursora de esa tendencia, lo que permitió a Bezos ganar el ansiado puesto.

4 - LA DEMOCRACIA POR INTERNET

Elecciones 2004. En la llamada revolución naranja de Ucrania, Internet y los móviles fueron usados para hacer campaña y convocar protestas. En EEUU, Howard Dean, ex-gobernador de Vermont, se situó como uno de los principales candidatos demócratas a las presidenciales al usar la Red y distribuir software libre entre sus colaboradores. Logró una recaudación récord, lo que dotó a la democracia de un arma muy poderosa en todo el mundo.

5 - MILLONES DE PERSONAS UNIDAS POR INTERNET POR EL INCIDENTE DE LAS TORRES GEMELAS
El11-S (2001). Aquel fatídico día, millones de personas de todo el planeta se volcaron en Internet para informarse, enviar e-mails a sus seres queridos y movilizarse contra el terrorismo. ICQ, pionero en los servicios de mensajería, permitía encender una vela para recordar a los caídos en el World Trade Center.


6 - EL TSUNAMI DE ASIA DEL 2005

Mientras las cadenas de televisión y las agencias de noticias corrían hacia el lugar del desastre, fueron personas anónimas los que, con sus cámaras, dieron cuenta de la magnitud de la tragedia. Los ataques terroristas a Londres y el huracán Katrina hicieron ascender aún más el periodismo ciudadano, en ocasiones más inmediato, apasionado e iluminado que el profesional.

Su nacimiento marcó una nueva tendencia. Su cierre también, ya que otorgó un papel preponderante a los programas para compartir archivos de pago. Sin duda, su salida al aire marcó un nuevo rumbo para la experiencia de los usuarios, al permitirles escuchar música y ver películas en sus PC.

El boom de Match.com (2002). Entre 2001 y 2002, el sitio para buscar pareja creció más de un 175%. Hoy, este tipo de portales está en claro auge, así como otros similares dedicados a la búsqueda de amigos, empleo, inmuebles, etc.


10 - LA COMUNIDAD CIENTIFICA SE UNE CONTRA EL SARS

10.- El SARS es descubierto a través de Internet (2003). Cuando el fatal y nuevo virus hizo su aparición, la Organización Mundial de la Salud usó la Red para conectar a científicos de catorce países. Trabajaron en tiempo real compartiendo información y resultados de exámenes. En un mes descubrieron el SARS.
